Just blaming drivers won’t stop accidents at Market Deeping corner

With reports of numerous instances of drivers losing control of their vehicles on the Blenheim Way/Northfield Road corner on the industrial estate, it is not good enough for the authorities to put this down to driver error and do nothing to reduce the problem.

If a pedestrian or a cyclist say were to be injured, simply being able to say it was the fault of the driver isn’t going to undo the injury.

It is clear that there is something about this corner which is leading a not insignificant number of drivers to misjudge the speed at which to take it.

Our roads have to be designed for the drivers we have, not the perfect drivers we might wish for. When there are numerous incidents whenever it rains, this indicates this corner is a problem for more than just the occasional driver that will be the case with any corner.

I am concerned that the proposals to build 240 houses off Northfield Road, which includes extension of the pavement around this corner, will put more pedestrians at risk from out of control vehicles.

There have been some suggestions as to possible reasons why there is a problem with this problem. There however isn’t any clear evidence. I have visited the site shortly after a number of incidents and have not been able to see contamination on the road surface.

Clearly however, more grip will reduce the risk, and so I am suggesting that Lincolnshire County Council should apply a high-grip coating to the road surface, including the manhole cover.

I hate the idea that we might one day hear of a serious accident on this corner and all be able to say we knew about the frequent issues yet the authorities had have done nothing to try to fix it.
